KUTOMOTIE 1, STOCKMANNINTIE 1
Kutomotie 1 was built in 1963 as a logistics center for the Stockmann department store. Over its lifespan, the block in Pitäjänmäki has housed various spaces, functions, and names: car dealership, car repair shop, gas station, studio, wholesale business, sewing workshop, pricing center, book warehouse, and headquarters. Over time, the department store became a tenant. Eventually, the storage and car dealership operations were sold, and the tenant relocated. The property remained in place. The area will be developed into a residential area for over a thousand residents, but the block will retain the book warehouse and gas station, which are protected due to Pitäjänmäki’s industrial history.
The Stockmann-Orno archive and catalog images represent the aesthetic of the era when the Kutomotie 1 logistics center was completed. The story of Orno’s lighting fixtures also had its time and continues today through reproduction. In 1936, the art smithy that had been reselling Orno’s lighting fixtures became its owner, and the company changed its name to Stockmann-Orno. Thus, Orno became Stockmann’s own “lighting workshop.” Over time, the workshop turned into an unprofitable “metal shop.” The operations of this “metal shop” were sold during a corporate restructuring in the mid-1980s. The Kerava lighting factory ceased operations in 2001. The demolition images of the Kutomotie block were taken between 2019 and 2021.
